Post-operative care is not provided by the Animal Welfare Association (AWA) or Animal Friends for Education and Welfare (AFEW). Instead, you may contact your local veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency clinic. You are responsible for all post-operative expenses.
ALTHOUGH COMPLICATIONS ARE RARE, PLEASE CALL YOUR VETERINARIAN OR AN EMERGENCY CLINIC (listed below) IF YOUR PET EXPERIENCES ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
- Labored or difficult breathing
- Not eating or drinking for more than 2 days after surgery
- Not urinating for more than 2 days after surgery
- Extreme listlessness (It is normal for your pet to appear sleepy from lingering effects of the anesthesia required to perform surgery.)
- Very pale mucous membranes (gums)
- Loss of coordination after recovery from anesthesia (at least 24 hours after surgery)
- Bleeding from the incision site
- Excessive swelling at the incision site
- An incision that has opened
- Excessive vomiting subsequent to pet's return home after surgery (Car sickness and minor vomiting can be a normal reaction to anesthesia.)
