After Care Instructions - What to Expect After Surgery

Please be aware that we are all volunteers. Because we care for the animals we give up our Saturdays or take a vacation day to run this clinic. All direction is taken from the doctor and surgical staff when it comes to the order of which animal is seen first - it is not first come, first serve. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

Remember, you are going to see what you do not see when you bring your pet to your own veterinarian. When you pay that extra amount you are getting your pet back fully awake and lively. When you use the low cost vet clinic, you will be getting your pet back in about half the time and you may experience some minor post operative issues as they come out of anesthesia.

  • Feed your pet a small meal and water when you get home. Do not be alarmed if he/she doesn't eat the first day.
  • Your pet may be drowsy from the anesthesia. This may last from 24 to 48 hours depending on the individual animal. Some animals may shiver and have an upset stomach, some will bob their heads and others will be lethargic...
  • Do not allow your pet to lick or chew the incision; this can cause a severe infection. If the animal licks the incision continuously, purchase an e-collar. (E-collars will be available at the clinic for $5.) Sutures are absorbable and will dissolve in 2 tp 4 months.
  • Keep your pet in the house. Do not let your animal run around the yard for 10 days. Debris, dirt, germs, or damage by flies could harm the area. We suggest walking dogs on a leash for the first week.
  • Confine cats to one small room for the first night. If you have multiple cats being altered on the same day, it is recommended that the cats be separated until the following day. Even cats who love each other can react aggressively towards one another while still under the effects of anesthesia.
  • We suggest shredded newspaper on top of kitty litter for cats for 3 days or purchasing "Yesterday's News" cat litter.
  • Female animals may have some swelling under the incision due to an internal layer of absorbable sutures.
  • DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN YOUR PET'S INCISION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING SURGERY! This will remove clotted blood and will cause your pet to bleed.
  • Male dogs may experience a fluid build-up in the scrotum which was contained the testicles. If severe swelling and redness develops, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Do not bathe your pet for 10 days.
  • Pets should not wear flea collars for 10 days. Products such as Frontline, Advantage or Revolution are allowed immediately.
  • Your pet can use stairways.
  • Your pet will gradually return to his/her normal activity level over 2 to 4 days.
  • Absorbable sutures can take 2 - 4 months to fully dissolve.
